A Real time Alternative to the Hilbert Huang Transform Based on Internal Model Principle

Edris Mohsen, Lyndon J Brown and Jie Chen

This article presents a new tuning approach for an adaptive internal-model-principle based signal identification algorithm whose computational costs are low enough to allow a realtime implementation. The algorithm allows an instantaneous Fourier decomposition of non-stationary signals that have a strongly predictable component. The algorithm is implemented as a feedback loop resulting in a closed loop system with a frequency response of a bandpass filter with notches at the frequencies of the Fourier decomposition. This is achieved through real time selection of the coefficients of the transfer functions in the feedback loop. Previously these coefficients were selected by solving a large set of coupled linear equations. Rules for explicitly solving for these parameters are given that only involve evaluating frequency responses at the frequencies of the instantaneous Fourier decomposition. This allows realtime implementation on a low cost lap top with sampling rates up to 10 kHz.

GPS and GSM Based Self Defense System for Women Safety

Sriranjini R

The world is becoming unsafe for women in all aspects. The crimes against women are increasing at a higher rate. The employed women are feeling unsafe due to increasing crimes. This paper proposes a quick responding mechanism that helps women during trouble. When someone is going to harass, she can press the button that is attached to the device and the location information is sent as an SMS alert to few pre defined emergency numbers in terms of latitude and longitude. The microcontroller used is PIC16877A. It is interfaced with a push button, a GPS module, a GSM modem and a speech circuit (ISD1820PY). If the switch is pressed, it activates the speech circuit to capture the attention of the people nearby for help. The program is developed in embedded language to demonstrate the system capability in providing real time response. Thus the girl can be safe and she can feel protected.

Synergetic MPPT Controller for Photovoltaic System

Nadia Mars, Faten Grouz, Najib Essounbouli and Lassaad Sbita

A novel non-linear power point tracking method of photovoltaic system (PV) based on synergetic control strategy is proposed. This technique uses a synergetic control strategy to achieve the maximum power point output without a chattering phenomenon. The PV system consists of a PV panel, DC-DC boost converter, MPPT controller and an output load. Synergetic control is easy to implement, has controllable dynamics towards the origin and gives a good maximum power operation under environmental changes (solar radiation and PV cell temperature). To show the robustness and validity of this approach a mathematical model is presented and simulated using Matlab/SIMULINK under different atmospheric conditions. Indeed, the simulation results showed the advantages of this new algorithm, especially the reduction of the chattering problem.

Time Synchronization Mechanism for Radio Interferometer Array

El Houssain Ait Mansour, Bruno Da Silva and Karl-Ludwig Klein

In both wired and wireless networks, synchronization is an important service for a wide range of applications in distributed systems. This includes radio interferometry. However, literature researches show that many distributed protocols cannot satisfy sub-ns time synchronization accuracy due to asymmetric delay errors, accumulated jitters and because of the strategy used to adjust offsets. This paper proposes a global time synchronization algorithm in distributed networks. The algorithm allows us to minimize asymmetric delays with sub-ns accuracy better than 10ps and achieved global time synchronization. The theory of the algorithm used is presented and analysed to prove that it achieves global time synchronization. Simulation results are given to show the performance and limitations of the proposed algorithm.

Internet of things is the collection of gadgets and embedded objects to gather and exchange data by the usage of internet. The internet of things with intelligent transport system (ITS) has become the elucidation for the navigation of vehicles, traffic signal control systems, and automatic number plate identification. It has been evolved in applications for providing contemporaneous data and feedback from diverse sources such as weather information, parking guidance and also the gentrify traffic information from time to time. The proposed system focuses on dynamic traffic light sequence based on the traffic density in order to decrease the rate of accidents at intersection of roads. The obstacles that may or may not occur at intersection are recognized and warned by usage of an alert system and a notification is generated. The traffic management is used to supervise and retrieve current status of traffic and violators are discovered. This is mainly done to evacuate the traffic congestion and accidents at peak hours.

Rayan Abdelazeem Habboub Suliman, Khalid Hamid Bilal and Ibrahim Elemam

Cognitive radio technology is a modernistic technology by which the idle licensed spectrum can be used by an unlicensed user which are called cognitive radio CR or secondary users. The CR technology was found to overcome the spectrum incompetence and inefficiency usage troubles. The major motivation of CR technology is current heavily underutilized of spectrum. Surly the primary user PU had all rights to use his spectrum band so CR mustnt interfere it on that band. Here we have to discuss about energy detection which is one of spectrum sensing techniques in CR functions and how to obtain the best available spectrum, to detect the spectrum hole, to estimate the optimum threshold voltage that produce the minimum Probability of false alarm and finally to enhance energy detection sensing algorithm by using MATLAB simulation.

Optimum Design of the Volute Tongue Shape of a Low Specific Speed Centrifugal Pump

Zhenmu Chen, Van Thanh Tien Nguyen and Ngoc Thoai Tran

In order to increase pump efficiency and apply an optimum design method of a low specific speed centrifugal pump less than 127 [m, m3/s, min-1], twelve kinds of volute casing with the same impeller are designed at impeller blade outlet angle of 34 degree. With each volute tongue shape, there is one volute casing, respectively. The effect of these volute casing shapes is investigated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In this present study the optimum design method in combination of volute tongue shape operating variables for pump performance enhancement is analyzed. Based on design of experiments (DOE) technique, the required experiment trials are determined. The optimization results are pointed out. The parameters chosen for optimum design are the volute tongue angle and the gap between impeller and tongue. The levels for the parametric specification are chosen in the ranges where the pump gets the best efficiency. The results demonstrate that the conventional design is not suitable for a low specific speed. After optimizing the volute tongue, the pump achieves the best performance at 0o of the volute tongue angle with the appropriate gap between impeller and volute tongue. It is observed that pump efficiency was improved up to 75.01%.

The Need for a Whole Life Framework in Electrical Power System Asset Management and the Problems with Individual Silo like Asset Management System Contributions

James Bruiners

The asset management of electrical power systems both in industry and academia currently offers up a wide spectrum of engineering practices and guidance to detect, diagnose and to combat asset deterioration. In doing so research largely aims to better enable enhanced decision or prediction making in single engineering applications such as partial discharge or dielectric condition measurements. This paper reviews the current state of the art as related to electrical asset management and sets out how todays engineering and maintenance heavy approaches are insufficient to meet the nature of the complex adaptive (Generation, Transmission & Distribution) systems. Furthermore this paper explains the need for a truly holistic governance framework capable of managing such complexities for power companies by using complex adaptive system science whilst grounded in the engineering, business and socio-technical attributes that applied engineering makes possible. In addition this paper outlines how utilising retroductive case study with hypothesis framework represents the best approach in creating such a fully holistic asset management capability for power companies.

Harpreet Singh Bedi, Nikhil Goyal, Sunil Kumar and Avinash Gupta

A supermarket or a hypermarket is a form where wide variety of product items is available. These product items can be food, beverages or any household product. The main purpose of supermarkets is to provide availability of all the products and save the time of the customers but sometimes customer gets frustrated while waiting in the queue at billing counter and sometimes they get confused while comparing the total price of all the products with the budget in the pocket before billing. To overcome these problems, we have designed a smart trolley using a smart phone and Arduino. With this system, there is no need for customer to wait in the queue for the scanning for the product items for billing purpose. Supermarkets or Hypermarkets provide this faculty to only those customers which having membership cards. When the customer inserts the membership card in the basket or trolley only then it will work as a smart trolley. Otherwise, it will work as a normal trolley. Supermarkets and hypermarkets use this technique as a strategy to increase the number of customers.
