These alternative approaches, collectively known as alternative medicine or Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), encompass diverse practices, therapies and philosophies that aim to promote health, prevent illness and treat ailments in ways that differ from mainstream Western medicine. The growing popularity of alternative medicine in recent years has prompted a critical examination of its effectiveness, safety and its role within the broader healthcare system.
