The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) defines personality disorder as an ‘enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that derviates markedly from the expectations of the individual’s culture’, which are manifested in two or more of the following areas: cognition, affectivity, interpersonal functioning and impulsive controls.
